Common Mistakes in Pet Photography

Photographs of our pets are some of our most cherished possessions. Unfortunately, they are also some of the most difficult to get right. Depending on the pet, getting them to sit still and look at the camera can be impossible. Here are some tips on avoiding some of the most common mistakes in pet photography.

1. Not Having Enough Light

One of the biggest mistakes people make when photographing pets is not having enough light. Pets move around a lot, so you need to be sure you have enough light to capture them in a photo. If you're photographing indoors, try turning on all the lights in the room or opening up the curtains. If you're outdoors, try standing in the shade so that your pet is better lit.

2. Not Getting Down on Their Level

When taking photos of pets, it's important to get down on their level. This will help to make them feel more comfortable and prevent you from getting a photo of their rear end. Get down on the ground or sit on a chair to be at eye level with your pet.

3. Not Being Patient

Pets can be unpredictable, so it's important to be patient when taking photos. If you try to hurry them along, you'll likely have a blurry photo in the end. Instead, take your time and wait for the perfect moment to snap a photo.

4. Not Using Props

Another common mistake is not using props. Props can help add interest to your photos and make them more fun. Try using toys, treats, or even people to get your pet's attention.

5. Not Editing Your Photos

Finally, don't forget to edit your photos. This can help to improve the quality of your photos and make them look their best. Try using photo editing software like Photoshop or Lightroom to make small adjustments and craft the perfect photo.

You can take beautiful photos of your beloved pet with a little patience and practice. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can be sure to capture some amazing memories that will last a lifetime. If you need help, consider hiring a professional pet photographer. They will have the experience and knowledge to help you get the perfect photo.

A Note From Sue

As a professional pet photographer based on Oahu, I've found that the best way to get great photos of your pets is to work with a professional who can help you capture their personality and spirit. A good pet photographer will know how to work with your pet to get them to relax and be themselves, resulting in some amazing photos that you'll cherish forever.
